SD video is based on the 1940's television standard designed to fill a nine-inch tube.

Now you are displaying it on a high resolution display after 60 years of technological advancements.

With all respect to TV TECH-man (who's answers I admire) - it's not the service to the house. It's the information content of 480 lines magnified on a high-res display.

If you really want to change things: Write to the stations that only provide standard def signal. Tell them (and their sponsors) that you are no longer going to watch their stations because of how horrible it looks on your new HD television. This will force them to upgrade to HD cameras.

Remember: Commercials pay for all television. Threaten to not watch the commericals and the stations will upgrade.

It's called scaling. HDTVs always scale signals to the native resolution of the TV. A 1080p scales 480i signals to 1080p. It has to add 2.5 times more lines. This fuzzy logic creates video artifacts and video artifacts.

That why 1080p TVs are bad. 720p TVs are better because HD looks great and SD channels are okay. 480i to 720p is not as bad as going to 1080p.

NEW HD TVs have all that resolution to them and they can really enhance the poor quality of the SD signals....

That's why they don't look as good...

CABLE has problems with their SIGNAL quality...old worn out, corroded connections will worsen the signal quality...

That's why many use Satellite for their signal...

And that's why I use Verizon Fiber Optics to my home.
The Low Definition signal is SO CLEAN that it's hard to distinguish SD from HD signals...

A very clean, snowless signal makes a whole world of difference in the picture quality.
