I am a caregiver of an elderly blind lady. She has not always been blind. She is also hard of hearing. She doesnt like to watch tv or listen to the radio. When I am there she LOVES to talk. My problem is I always feel bad when i leave her because I know she will just spend the rest of the day sitting around, not knowing what to do, and feeling sad. She is always saying how lonely she gets. She lives with her daughter so I cant get her a pet for company. She is pretty confined to her home. She has had a broken back in the past and it is hard for her to walk for very long distances. My question is can anyone think of anything that I can get for her to do when I am not there. She is very old, but still pretty with it mentaly. Please help. I love this lady and i spend as much extra time with her as i can, but i have a family of my own to care for!

Instead of feeling guilty for all the time you can't spend, realize that she is undoubtedly very thankful for the time you DO spend with her. She knows as well as you do that you do not have unlimited amounts of time to spend with her. Stop beating yourself up. You are clearly a very caring person. I commend that.

That's very sweet, and heartbreaking to hear. Obviously we need to think of activities that don't involve a sense of sight. Although she's hard of hearing, what about getting novels on audio tapes??? Those are fun to listen to, and it's something to make the time pass! :) Music wouldn't hurt either, if you can find or burn some CD's she would enjoy. But I'm sure there are many other things she can do. You know there's a lot of blind people in this world and I'm sure they find a lot of things to do with their time. Anyways, good luck, I'm praying for you and that poor women.

Would she enjoy Audio Books (books on tape)? Thousands of books are available ranging from popular fiction, to classics, to non-fiction.

stop feeling guilty and try and spend the time you can, I would suggest that you reach out for local senior groups, maybe you can bring her together with others who are not as limitted with travel. good luck!!
