vacuuming will not rid of the fleas. Best thing to do is to get it a flea dip and use K9 advantix on him.

* Don't use dish soap! Your dog will have a bad skin reaction to the soap. If you are looking for a good shampoo, then purchase a flea and tick shampoo with oatmeal.

I don't know about the vacuum, depends on how strong the suction is. I do know that the answer is NO. You cannot get rid of fleas 100% without chemicals of some sort. People who say you can are trippin. I have people bring their dogs to my grooming shop constantly, telling me how they never have fleas because they feed garlic, use certain lotions etc. Their dogs alway have fleas. I tell them,,,they act surprised, then come back the next time saying the fleas are gone...dog still has fleas. Garlic doesn't work! It is also toxic to some dogs. Tea sprays don't work,,,some of them are toxic to dogs. Washing everything in your house in various things, vaccuming and putting down borax powder (also dangerous to dogs/cats/children) does not work. These things are why people believe that they just continue to "get" fleas over and over. The real truth is that they were never completely gone in the first place. Having said all this,,,,Advantage does work. Completely. It will take care of fleas on the animal,,,,and anything that is in your house. It is safer than most 'natural' flea products,,,,and much safer than having fleas. Hartz is dangerous, and does not work. No dept store or pet store brands actually work 100%. Advantage online is 10.00 for a months worth.

Not meaning to sound harsh,,,just trying to aticipate the bad advice you'll get ,and say why it doesn't work :o)

Not many people are willing to do this, but if you bathe your dog every 3 days (no shampoo) and flea comb your dog thoroughly while he is still wet, you will be able to eliminate the fleas.

A healthy dog's skin won't dry out from frequent bathing without shampoo.

Remember that fleas live in the grass. You may need to treat your yard if you're in a climate that doesn't freeze over.

What?? Don't do that, how traumatic would that be for the dog!!

Vacuums will not suck up fleas, and they certainly won't suck up the eggs and larvae!!

I suggest you get yourself some Frontline or Revolution - you know 'chemicals'. Ooooh. These things are formulated to be safe for animals yet deadly for fleas - unlike vacuum cleaners. Just stay away from chemicals available in stores, THESE are the dangerous ones!

It is safe to vacuum your pet to a point but it will not get rid of fleas. Try adding 1/2 teaspoon of Brewer's yeast to the food every day. Fleas do not like the chemical reaction given off in the dog's skin. You will also need to sprinkle a mix of baking powder and Borax on your carpeting to get rid of the fleas in the carpeting or they will start biting on you. Also wash all of your bedding and anything fabric the dog comes in to contact with that is washable in the hottest water possible to remove any flea eggs. The Brewer's yeast will also improve the skin and coat of the dog and will not affect the smell of the dog's breath at all. I have been giving it to my dog's for 4 years now and while everyone else complains of fleas I have none on 4 dogs. You can get brewer's yeast from any health food store for around $10-$15 a can which lasts a long time. Just remember to keep it in the fridge or freezer to stay fresher longer. I sprinkle it just on top of the food but I have also mixed it with a bit of water.

StuLisa4 gives good advice - listen to her.
A vacuum cleaner will work on your carpets, but not on your pets. You can toss a flea collar into your vacuum bag, vacuum your house and then toss the bag in the garbage.

In order to control or eradicate fleas you have to treat all your animals, treat your entire home and treat your yard. And then 20 days later, repeat.

If you want to spend hours with a flea comb, you can comb out the fleas (not the eggs - they usually drop to the carpet) and then kill each flea, one by one.

But then the eggs in the carpet will hatch and then jump on your dog for a blood meal. And then those fleas will lay eggs in your carpet and while you are combing out the new fleas, the eggs are hatching....

You need to use something to get rid of the fleas on the dog, shampooing works best and then use a metal comb to get rid of the eggs. I hate poisons and chemicals for me and my dogs.

I use garlic in their diet .(I use odorless garlic capsules and sprinkle it on their food. This deters fleas! I also would check what you are feeding your dog. The more premium and holistic the dog food the healthier your dog is and is less apt to have fleas stick around!)

You can vacuum all over the house and get flea eggs and larvae. Wash his bedding. 95% of the flea population live as eggs and larvae. You can also use food-grade diatomaceous earth. Spread it all over your house and backyard, leave overnight, then vacuum it up the next day. DE kills insects by cutting through their exoskeleton.

Wash your pup in a natural shampoo. To prevent fleas, I use brewer's yeast/garlic tablets, raw apple cider vinegar (put a teaspoon of it in her water bowl), and a homemade insect repellant:

Slice a lemon into thin slices and pour a quart of boiling water over it. Let it steep. Add a few drops of lavender essential oil (available in Whole Foods) and let it steep overnight, then pour into a spray bottle and spray on your pet. I store my solution in the refrigerator.

EDIT
Garlic is FINE in small amounts.

Try lavender oil. Using a vacuum isn't gonna get rid of the fleas!

A vacuum will not work but I have had excellent success with garlic pills or suppliments. For some reason, it neuters the fleas and they dont reproduce. Best to start in the wintertime when the fleas aren't as bad.
