I guess it depends on if you are praying to God (or whatever you call your 'Supreme' being) or to a different being...such as a "guardian spirit" or other sorts of energies...I tend to have a habit of looking up in all cases...have a nice day...-H.L.-

It depends. I guess. Sometimes, I have my eyes shut but am looking straight ahead. I don't think where we are looking. Has any bearing on whether we are looking up to God or down in shame. Most people, if you think about it. Bow their heads to pray nearly all the time.

I have no set way to pray. Sometimes I pray while I am driving so I keep my eyes open and on the road. I may be on my face, my back, walking around, looking up, down, it really makes no difference at all as long as you pray.

It doesn't matter the posture of your head, it's the posture of your heart. You should always humble yourself before the Lord. (ref Luke 18:9-14)
Physically speaking, I think it has more to do with what your prayer and supplication is about. When it's a joyous prayer, one of praise, I tend to look up. When it's a prayer of concern and sadness, I tend to be looking down.

Most people tend to look up when praying because of the belief that God is above in heaven. They bow their heads because of humility. To acknowledege their nothingness before God - that God is the greatest and we are nothing in His eyes. We are all equal in His eyes.

It depends upon the moment. Most of the time I pray in the orans stance (head up, eyes closed, arms open, palms up). This opens me up physically to be open to God. It is also a habit from my days in a charismatic church.
At other times I choose to kneel and bow my head. This depends upon the moment, if I want to remove distractions, etc.

I pray how ever I am feeling. Sometimes I pray with my head down, up looking to the heavens, sometimes I pray like my creator is right next to me. So it depends how deep I want to get.

My most serious prayers are on my knees, at times with my head up and times down, ~eyes open and close. Sometimes I fall asleep in prayer while laying down with my hands still in position, that night my Spirit guide came and took my hands and held them. Every situation is different in some way and in every place that I go into prayer.

When I pray publically in front of a group or privately in my own room I bow my head and close my eyes in reverence to my God and Father. Personally I try to visualize to who I am addressing my prayers , it helps keep my mind and thoughts focused.
