Well Thats a Stupid Question, because 4 wheel always has an advantage over a front wheel, usually front wheel is a crappy system and result in an absolutely horrible traction(Yes traction is needed everyday if you are trying to avoid an accident in Dry weather with a front wheel the possibility of a front wheel losing control is extremely high while 4 wheel basically ensure that you will be able to avoid everything) also naturally 4 wheel handles way better than a front wheel
if the choice was between a rear wheel and a four then it would be hard, but front wheel is naturally known as a poor driving system built for the poor who can not afford rear or 4 wheel drive

I can think that they want to be safer during those 10 days that it does snow. They may want the security of knowing that they can get out of mud, if they get stuck. Maybe they will hit a slick spot on the road, from either rain or oil and want the better traction that is afforded.
Most all wheel drives only use either the two rear or two front wheels unless the increased traction is called for.

Perhaps a vehicle with the features desired by the buyer just happens to be priced right and is an AWD as opposed to a lesser desired FWD.
I'll take my Subaru Outback with it's road hugging characteristics in wet or snowy conditions over any other vehicle. It's cargo area and fold down rear seats are an added plus. With 28 MPG it's fine for me.
Performance in snowy conditions is not the only reason to have an AWD. Wet and freezing conditions are also considerations. Let's not forget about when it may be necessary to drive for a bit off of a paved surface. It may be wet grass or a muddy lane that a FWD could have trouble with.
Best Wishes

All wheel drive is better but you will suffer with gas mileage. The problem with front wheel drive is 99% of them are actually one wheel drive. only one wheel is powered which makes for poor wet/dry traction. although the after market does make limited slip diffs for some front wheel drive cars. I don't know of a front wheel drive car that comes with a limited slip (posi traction). I would rather have a front wheel drive with a limited slip then an all wheel drive due to gas mileage.

No good reason at all. 4 wheel drive is good for rough country work and getting out of problems (if you know how to do it) like mud, sand and snow.
A front wheel drive vehicle is a better driving machine and will do better on the road if properly made and driven - see Sterling Moss and all his rally wins in small underpowered front wheel drive cars.

AWD can also improve handling and driver confidence on any type of surface, not only snow. Also, many of the cars that come with AWD are very fast, such as WRX STi, Lancer Evo, Mazda Speed6, Volvo S60 R, and many others.

they still drive good in wet weather also on rainy days, there many uses for them, but for ten days of snow it doesn't hardly seem worth it,but if you want to travel and you hit snow you will be prepared for it,it doesn't hurt to own one you never know when you might need it,there's an old saying its better to have it and not need it as to need it and not have it,good luck and happy thanksgiving.

Maybe they want to look cool, maybe they like big cars/trucks. Both reasons are stupid.
