Is it necessary that Muslim present should be equally violent ? I am asking this question because a number of Answerers have tried to justify their present violence by quoting Middle Dark Ages. How much justified are such excuses ?

Humans are violent. That's an inescapable truth. (Just read Lord of the Flies)

No it is not necessary for violence for any religion. That is foolishness. Violence is not necessary at all. The stories that are read about in the old testament in the Bible was God's was of destroying the disobedient of His word. After Jesus came, this pattern stopped. God extended forgiveness through his son and all had the opportunity for forgiveness and another chance, and again, and again, until they got it right by repenting and going to the cross. Violence doesn't solve anything as you can see from the old testemant. There was always someone fighting someone. There are times when war is needed. The violence that some muslims cause is unneeded is wasteful. There is no justification for it. It is just plain stupid.

I'd like for people to be well-educated in history so that we can reduce the chance of repeating the mistakes of the past. This includes Christians and non-Christians. Non-Christians are quick to point out the excesses evil men perpetrated in the name of their religion, but they tend to neglect the sacrifices Christians have made over the centuries. When the plagues struck Europe, it was the Christians that stayed behind to care for the sick and dying. It was Christians who were first on the scene when the tsunami hit Indonesia a few years ago. Christians have always been on the side of the poor, the sick, and the hungry...

I could also counter that the atheists didn't do a real great job preventing bloodshed under the militantly anti-religious Khmer Rouge. I think most atheists would argue that is not representative of what they believe and I would say the same thing. Violence by christians 600-1000 years ago has nothing at all to do with me right now.

People who use a violent act of the past to justify a recent violent attack are crazy. Obviously, there are those who still are violent but violence seems to have eased over the decades/centuries.

Middle Dark Age was dark, confused and I'd say amoral.
Don't forget that all great religious leaders have always said, like Jesus:
The greatest commandment is "love your neighbor as yourself" .
No God fearing religion in this world has to be violent. Love and tolerance is what religion should be.

I think the point is that culture makes us violent, not religion. Christians were part of a very violent culture for many, many centuries, but that doesn't mean that Christianity equates to violence, and it shouldn't mean Islam equates to violence.

The history of the whole world is marked by outbursts of violence. No religious or cultural group has a lock on it - there's been lots of bloodshed to go round.

No present violence can be justified by violence in the past.

We are supposed to learn from the past. Not try to copy it. That is a vegged out excuse. Militant christians need to get a grip. Jesus was not a violent person. He operated on the philosophy of infinite love, not hate. If he were here today, he would oppose militant christians and call them the sons and daughters of Belial.
