if someone is embarassed to say how much they give it`s for the exact same reason they`ll boast about how much they spent elseware-- pride!
as for me, i give BACK to the Lord 10% of my gross income plus offerings as the word instructs!

I don't think that most people who boast about how much they spent on some new gadget are tithing at all.
Besides, how much they spent on a gadget isn't going to reveal their salary. No matter how expensive, they could simply have saved up for it. But if a tithe is 10% of one's salary, it does. Most people are uncomfortable posting their salaries (or enough info for others to figure it out) on a public forum, understandably.

Ya know, I think thats an interesting question. I may not share the fundamental premise, but sociologically I think alot would shift if the meme was different. If it was socially expected to discuss the good that you have done on a day to day basis - that would create a different paradigm. Lets talk about what we have given, instead of what we are afraid of losing.

i don't donate to revealed religion. i don't donate to boy scouts either. i give to people in need, not agencies that require people to register and then, if they meet guidelines, they will get a nickel of the donation and the rest goes into someone's pocket at the agency. i've not seen many churches actually help families that were not members. the ones i've seen are stingy with the money and also force people to prove they need the money before the church offers any help. good thing jesus did not give christians a 'means test'. withhold your money from the church until you are certain the money is being used for what it is given.

Most people like attention. Expensive clothes, toys and jewelery garner more attention than charitable donations.

I think that boasting about anything is in poor taste. At least, spending on toys (unlike spending on religion) is of some use.

Don't let your left hand know what your right hand is doing. We are told to give in secret so that we are not tempted to boast or self-aggrandize. Neither are we to feel superior about whether we give more than another person. Jesus spoke of the rich people in the temple who made a show of their giving, and said that they had their reward in the eyes of other men. We want our reward in Heaven. If we give in secret, our Father rewards us in secret.

This I say and testify in The Lord , that ye henceforth walk not as other gentiles walk ,
in the vanity of their mind , having the understanding darkened , being alienated from
the life of God , through the ignorance in them , because of the blindness of their hearts

They don't want you to know, that way you can never do an analysis of how much conservatives donate versus how much liberals donate. They know if you did, you would find that red states (conservative republican) donate WAY MORE than blue states (liberal democrat) in proportion to income! (Oh, that's right, someone already did that study.)

I haven't seen anybody mention any of those things on this board. You must be reading different answers than me.
As to the real world (yes, it exists!!!), I don't hang with people who talk about what they spend. It's crass, and besides, I'm BROKE ;-)
