A contribution to their Memorial Fund or Widows & Orphans Fund is always appreciated, and is tax-deductible.

I live in an apartment building so I very rarely see my postal worker, on the odd occasion that he does come up with a parcel for me I'm friendly and we greet each other by name. I don't have a recycle pick-up driver. There's ample recycling points across my neighbourhood and I take my recycling there myself. The police don't direct traffic here, they do police work. I'm not even sure where my local fire department is, but back home in England I supported them whenever they went on strike. Most of them lived around me as the depot was at the top of our road. I tip where appropriate and deserved. I have been known to offer cookies and doughnuts to homeless people.

As a firefighter, I always appreciate a nice letter to the editor as Penguin has suggested or a letter to the department or city administration is also good. Do you live in a town that is volunteer or career? If Volunteer a donation along with the letter is appreciated. If Career, a monetary donation usually can not be taken. Rather than a monetary donation, find out when they have fund raisers and support them. Know when they have contract issues and support them. Supporting your local firefighters is something that can help the firefighters immensely.
OH yeah... Cookies are also great!!!

I think the best way would be a letter to the editor of your local newspaper. You could make your feelings public and the fire department personnel will appreciate the pat on the back. Good luck!!

Talk to you son about how brave and important they are and then have him write them a thank you letter and draw a picture. Nothing says thank you like the honesty of a child. If he not far along enough yet to do anything but scribble: Have him "write something" and draw the corresponding picture, ask him what he wrote and drew, then you can go back and write in pen below his scribbles what he was trying to write. Always brings a tear to my eye!

Cooking something is my vote simply because they do have to do most of their own at the station. However, before I commit to that, I'd find out more because once I tried to give 2 large bags of ripen avocados to the local police for helping me and they said they weren't allowed to accept gifts from citizens. (Just bribes--kidding, just kidding!). Anyway, maybe a nice memo holder with attaching pen for the dispatch desk or something.

COOK THEM A NICE MEAL-THEY LIVE IN THE FIRE HOUSE FOR 2-3 DAYS AT A TIME AND WOULD ENJOY A NICE INEXPENSIVE DINNER TO BE BROUGHT TO THEM.
