I know this is a stupid question, but every time I see the news it's always the guys I see. If so is there a ratio the military would use to put women in units

Women are not allowed in "combat" mos's, though some of the mos's they are allowed in tend to see some action in Iraq, but infantry, special forces, etc. do not allow women, which is why it is all-men that you see on TV. There are also many more men than women in general in the military, so that contributes to it.

Women are about 11% of the Army, but they are restricted from serving in 3/4 of the units.

The basic unit of operation in Iraq is the Brigade. It is usually composed of:

2 to 3 Maneuver Battalions (Infantry, Armor)
1 Reconnaissance Battalion (Cavalry)
1 Artillery Battalion
1 Engineer Battalion
1 Air Defense Battery
1 Support Battalion (Supply, Maintenance, Truck, Medical)
Headquarters (Signal, Chemical & MP)

Of these, women are only allowed in the air defense battery, the support battalion and the headquarters. In some very limited areas, the Engineer battalion.

So 75% of the unit areas visited by the media will have no women, or very few women around. They tend to be concentrated in the support battalion and headquarters company. So when the reporters go looking for action, they tend to end up with the maneuver battalions, ergo, no women in the pictures.

Iraq is presenting a different war -- the Artillery, Armor and Air Defense units have been repurposed to Infantry rolls -- mostly because there is no opposing air force and there is no need for massive shoots. What I would like to know is what the ADA units are doing with their women when the send out infantry patrols?

Absolutely. They serve all over Iraq.

There is no specific ratio of women to men in a unit, and different types of units have a larger population of women than others. For example, an Infantry Battalion would have no assigned women, but a Signal Battalion might be up to 20% female, an MP Company might be up to 40% female.

Women do serve outside the bases, many pull "convoy duty" providing security for vehicle movement throughout the country. A woman I knew was killed by an IED while on convoy duty.

Others interpret, interrogate, and provide security, medical and other support to patrols outside the bases. Female Soldiers are the only U.S. Soldiers permitted to search Iraqi females, so they're out on patrol with the Infantry guys everyday!

To date, over 90 women have given everything while serving in Iraq. One women has even earned the Silver Star for valor in combat!

Let me sum this up for you. I didn't read all of the other answers on here but... I am a Staff Sergeant in the US Army. As a squad leader in Iraq, women serve in ALL aspects of the Army. The old standard of women NOT serving on the front lines is crap! I have been an MP (Military Police) for some time now. Back in the day when there was a "Front Line" they kept women in the rear. Now, I have had females that have gotten tasked to roll out the wire on patrols with the infantry. Remember this... we are not fighting a linear battle! There is NO "Front Line". If anyone on here can tell me what the enemy uniform looks like let me know! I'll wait!!!

Heck yes they serve right along side us. The reason you dont often see them is because there happen to be alot more men in the military than females, thats all.
The military doesnt use any "ratio" for units. Its all random. Some units will have one woman, some will have 10. Fact is, when we're in uniform, we see eachother as soldiers not men or women, just soldiers.

Female soldiers can served alongside with men in the Iraq war because there is no prohibition.

My friend has twin daughters who are Blackhawk pilots, so yes they serve with the men.
This is a silly question, our military has been unisex for quite some time now, and women have proven their combat readiness without fail.
