It may sound old fashioned, (although I'm only 23) however the first chapter books I read with my mother was the Little House on the Prairie series. Some of my fondest memories are of reading those books with my mother. The themes are simple enough for a young child to understand since the book is written from a young child's point of view. These books opened up a world of classic literature to me, and I ended up majoring in English.

Junie B and Cam Jansen are fantastic. Also try the Little House on the Prairie series [also now come in the Martha years-Laura's Great grandmother, Charlotte years-Grandmother, Caroline years-mother, and Rose years-daughter]. Wal-mart carries the junior classics like Peter Pan, Little Women, Pollyanna, Anne of Green Gables, Secret Garden, Heidi, Alice in Wonderland and many others redone for younger children to be able to understand [Dalmatian Publishing]and they are only $2.50! If you are reading them to her [not sure of her age] she should understand and really enjoy all of these stories. We have read them all and were great hits. Best of luck-hope you enjoy my suggestions.
