I quit my last job to be a stay at home mom for a while, and it's been about 1 and 1/2 years, and I am looking for work now but will this make me look bad that I have not been working?

It will be hard and you will be judged by it. I am a hiring professional and while we hate to think that you might be discriminated against, it's a reality. It depends greatly on what skills you've retained. Are you in an industry like "high tech" where the skills change regularly? What have you been doing besides raising your child? It is clear that you will be competing against well qualified people that don't have such a large gap. So you must network with people to find a job. Join www.linkedin.com and www.facebook.com. Start networking with people, find others in your same situation, find others sympathize with you and enlist their help.

It shouldn't. Most employers now recognize that it's reasonable for people to take time off to parent.

In an interview, don't be apologetic about having taken time off, and stress some of the skills you improved during that time that are applicable to jobs, like time management and multi-processing.

I don't think that it makes you look bad. You have been an at home mom. There is nothing wrong with that. Actually, a lot of people do that.
