We have had a major flea problem in our house for about 3 weeks. The cat now is cured, but unfortunately the house wasn't. We got so sick of the fleas biting us that we finally invested in calling Orkin. The guy came and sprayed something all over the carpet and furniture. Can anyone tell me how long it takes for the fleas to be gone after the treatment, since I am still seeing fleas around? Thanks

People often report that exterminators have not worked. The reason for this I think is that most exterminators are not proficient in killing fleas - they just use the same chemicals for them that they use for all insects, and fleas are in a class of their own, they need particular chemicals!

You should be able to treat your house yourself as long as you've got hold of the right spray, which you won't find in a store. I do not think, as far as I know, exterminators will be able to get hold of any chemicals that aren't available at a vets.

I suggest you call Orkin and ask when they would expect the last flea to die after their treatment. If you still see fleas after this time, ask them why. After you've listened to their babble, or even before, find yourself some proper spray - Indorex, Acclaim, Staykil and Skoosh are all good places to start.

The adult fleas were likely killed by the treatment, but nothing can kill the pupae. Their protective covering is too tough. So they will hatch. If you treated a few weeks ago, what you're probably seeing is the new hatch. After they die, you should be fine. Make sure that Orkin used an insect growth regulator. That stops the life cycle of the flea. Fleas can be awful. Good luck.

Make sure to treat your dogs and cats if you have any. Also if you really want to make sure they die sprinkle some salt on your rugs let it sit for a couple of days then put some moth balls in your vacuum cleaner and vacuum really good. Then throw the bags away. The salt will kill the little boogers. I saw that on DIY on t.v. Also if you have ants in your yard next summer don't kill all of them off ants and termites are adversaries and the ants eat flea eggs.
Keep a couple of ant hills around but don't let them get out of control.
