Many people have suggested Honda Civic. They are notorious for poorly protecting occupants from injury.

From a cost, insurance, and safety standpoint, I suggest a European car. An older VW or Volvo if you can find them are great. First you want something that is inexpensive so you don't have to carry comprehensive and collision insurance. The cost of those coverages will skyrocket your insurance with a young driver. Next, you want to focus on safety. Don't just take anecdotal stories from people about good cars like, "a Honda Civic is great." That's nonsense.

Take my advise, pick out a few likely test cars from your local newspaper, and then call the insurance company. Run a few quotes and you'll be able to tell pretty quickly the best choice.

Think about it, insurance companies spend lots of money researching cars and their safety. If one car is much cheaper on insurance than other one, there is probably a REALLY GOOD reason why.

You should look to a 4 seater (cheaper on insurance), dependable and will last him through highschool and college. Good choices would be a Honda Civic, Nissan Sentra, or Toyota Corolla. These all rate as great used cars in Consumer Reports magazine. If you buy one that is 2002 or newer, you will find that they are comparable in the price range of $9,000-$12000. They also hold their resale value, which will be great in 5-6 years when it is time for him/her to graduate from college and get a new car. These cars also get great gas mileage since it is estimated that gas will reach $4 a gallon by summer of 2008. Good luck on your car shopping.

Personally I don't think 16 year olds should be driving. And I don't think that parents should buy them a car. It will mean so much more and he'll take better care of a car that he purchases himself.
