Hi Chris. I found an excellent article on the pathophysiology of eczema on Pubmed.

Here is the reference:

"Getting more and more complex: the pathophysiology of atopic eczema". European Journal of Dermatology. Vol. 17, Number 4, 267-83, July-August, 2007.

The entire article is available for free.

Best wishes and good luck.

There's a few things you could try. Don't bathe him every night - bathe him maybe once or twice a week. This doesn't mean leave him dirty, give him a good clean down nightly. Bathing dries out the skin and will aggravate his condition. Also, don't use soap products etc on him, just plain warm water does fine for sensitive skin. If the rash on his face seems more like nappy rash, there's a chance that there's too much moisture building up round there. Is he a dribbler? Take care to wipe him often and try to keep him dry. If his formula drips down when he's feeding, try putting a bib up round where the drips go. Everyone seems to prefer different products, but I got the best results with Oilatum baby. You do need to smother it on dry patches, and do it often. The Dr may prescribe a steroid cream if it's severe. This does clear it up well, but try to use it sparsly, it thins the skin and makes the problem worse long term. Cut down on your household chemicals. Try a baby/eczema friendly detergent (Boots do a good one, although it doesn't smell great), and vacuum often. Even your products can irritate him, so keep body spray/perfume to a minimum and try switching to roll on deoderant if you don't use it already.
