Where do you find the sell by date on canned goods? is there such a thing.?

Recently, I opened a can of green beans that seemed a bit "off" I was leery of eating it, so I didn't. I tried to find a sell by date but all i saw was a bunch of numbers that made no sense. Don't canned goods have to have a sell by date like milk?

Cans either have it embossed on the bottom or lid, or it is printed on the label. Look at that bunch of numbers and it will probably end with an 06, 07, or 08. Throw out anything before 1207
