Catholic priests need to be ordained and receive permission from their bishop (if a diocesan priest) or the head of their religious order (if a member of a religious order). Protestants need to have a theological degree from an accredited university or college and also be ordained. Rabbis need to be graduates of a Yeshiva with a degree in rabbinical studies.
You then make contact with an Officer Selection Officer of the service's recruiting service and make application for commission in that service's Chaplain Corps.
There are six Muslim Imams in the Army Chaplain Corps and two in the Navy. I'm not familiar with the requirements for their theological preparations since Islam has no formal ministry in the way that Christian and Jewish denominations do.
But, the bottom line is something which separates the member of the clergy from the job of a Chaplain. If you are not willing to carry the message of your faith into the midst of the living hell which is the combat arena, don't think of getting a commission in any Chaplain Corps.

You can't be a USMC chaplain, because they don't exist. You have to have a seminary degree and then talk to a chaplain recruiter.

The chaplains for all services are centrally recruited by each branch of service. Contact your local recruiter for the address and telephone number in Washington, DC so you can talk directly to them.
