most chicken eggs are not fertil. It is the menstual cycle of the hen. You would need a rooster to fertilize it

For vegetarians this is actually a serious question. I know one person who called them "chicken periods."

For those who don't know, regular chicken eggs that you get at the store aren't fertile and could never become chicks.

Incidentally, the killing of embryonic birds in their eggs has also been a serious question in some communities where an overabundance of Canada geese foul (ha!) lawns, waterways, roads and sidewalks. A birth control method called "egg oiling" is used to keep their numbers down. Eggs are checked to see if they float before they are treated; if they float, it's too late in their development and they aren't treated. Proper egg oiling while the eggs still sink stops bird embryo development during its earliest stages. This method has been approved by the Humane Society as an ethical method for reducing goose populations.

Amazing what tangents some of these questions can take.

You do know that the mommy chicken has to have a daddy chicken pay her a little visit before there can be a baby chicken, right? Modern eggs from factory-type farms are infertile. The farmers don't waste time letting the roosters fertilize the hens unless they want baby chicks.

Edit--I think you would do better to ask, when did the first person decide to eat something they saw fall out of a hen's rear end?

It's not so much the egg but the chicken in question. God created the animals and gave us dominion over them. Many references of eating meat in the Bible, especially lambs. The meat today is not raised healthy with the antibiotics and piled on top of each other. These animals and foul should be raised organically and treated with more respect. Even the way they are slaughtered is a disgrace. When they are here to give their lives for food for us, I think their lives should be taken with love, respect and thankfulness.

No, because not all chicken eggs will potentially produce a chicken. Some eggs are not fertilized.

Therefore, eating a chicken egg is not "killing a potential life."

God gave us the OK to eat non genetic engineered chickens and their eggs. As long as they are cooked of course.

Er... most eggs aren't fertilized these days. And if it was - then I most likely live on a farm, and probably already ate the chicken in question ;-)

Most of the eggs you get from the store haven't even been fertilized, so no biggie...
