Hi, I have decided that i would like to buy my dad a Bike for X-mass. The main use would be for street and some light off road (trail) riding. I really cant spend much more then $300 and was wondering if there are any "Good Quality" bikes out there that would fit my price range.

(Not looking for any Generic Wal-Mart / K-mart specials) would like a good quality bike.

Firstly, do not touch full suspension for less that $1000. Not worth it.

Next. For your budget you are not going to get a brilliant machine, but you will get something that will do enough of the riding that you want to do without falling appart. $300 is still entry level.

I would look at Vbrakes, rather than disc. Get a hard tail (Front fork only). You should be able to get an ali frame for this. Also, branded components are a must (SRAM or Shimano). You are probably stuck with 21 or 24 gears. Get trigger shifters, as opposed to twist grips.

Unfortunately, Xmas is not a good time to haggle, but you might be able to pick up an ex display or 06 model within your budget.

I would look at the following:

Specialized Rockhopper,
Giant Rock SE
Trek (anything by this company within this bracket will be reasonable).
Claude Butler (Older Cape Wraths possible)
Dawes (Get an 06 Oxide. Cracking bike for the money (Yes I know it is yellow)).

Failing that, you might consider a highbrid, especially with the type of riding you have specified.

Luck

what a good son you are! i would suggest skipping the internet bikes, ( never heard anything good about ironhorse)
go to local bike shop and tell them what you are looking for, if you can find a good shop, they can sell you a decent bike for that purpose for your Dad. start shopping early. you have plenty of time
Good luck
