There is a lot of diversity in America, but the vast majority is still Christian. Maybe, because other religions have a far smaller presence in America, Americans of other religions are more likely to turn to people they know than to the internet for answers.
Christianity is the biggest religion in America, so many people who are not religiously practicing or even believers may consider themselves tied to Christianity in some way. Christianity is also based on belief to a far greater extent than many religions, so someone who is having questions about their beliefs may feel more comfortable in the anonymity of the internet.
I'd like to add, I'm startled at how many people seem to assume that the words "religion" and "Christianity" are synonymous (case in point the answer that so many of the users are Christian because this is a religion forum). From the perspective of an American Jew, I find it somewhat upsetting to think that there really are people who don't know that other religions exist.

i do no longer think of that's 80% - it is via the fact all of us have a integrated interest to be responsive to God - some come to him rapidly, others much less so. An "Atheist" can come here and study God in a "risk-free" way, no church, no sway of communication... and discover issues out. Many have in no way been in a church or be responsive to who God extremely is... basically have innovations from offended or injury human beings. regrettably, many Christians are immature and don't so so nicely responding and build on the unbelievers' objections. yet there are various who do nicely and understand the point here. that's not approximately me, or us (Christians), yet approximately a suitable God who's clever and gracious... and loving. I basically want human beings to be responsive to that he's not something yet sturdy and to be responsive to him for eternal existence. so a great way as selection in united statesa., the Atheists are extra vocal (i.e. ACLU and the mainstream media) yet easily human beings of religion are a gentle majority, they're frequently silent.

I have to agree that most people are drawn to the religion and spirituality genre here. As one or two, or maybe more, have stated, if people have questions (and I hope these folks are genuinely interested in finding answers, not just trying to repeat something they heard or are trying to pick a fight) then this is a good place to look, post, respond, etc., at one's leisure. As a lay minister (I'm not yet ordained), this forum gives me a chance to see and observe how many folk are thinking. Thanks to all for asking and responding, and may you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday.

I don't think this is the case. I've seen many atheists ask/answer questions on numerous occasions. Also pagan & Wicca people here, too. Also there are others, but I haven;t seen as many compared with the other three groups I mentioned.

Because around 75 - 80% of the U.S. population is Christian, so it makes perfect sense that 80% of the people here are Christian as well.
What I don't understand is the abnormally large amount of atheists here.
