When you are taking a piss, do you stand or seat? I have been told since I was little to sit down or that it is a sin. Is this true? No funny answers please.

When you are standing up, after you are done taking the piss, you will "shake it" which is when urine goes all over (if not visible, then microscopic) but it does get on you. Now if you are sitting down and do the same thing, it should go on the toilet and not on your clothes or you body.

This controversy was resolved in the early stages of Islam.
It is better to urinate sitting down and then washing, but when proper facilities are not available, it is perfectly acceptable to urinate standing up. The controversy was resolved when Hudaifa testified that he once saw the Prophet using a wall. Eventually, it was was recorded by Bukhari:

Narrated Hudhaifa':
The Prophet and I walked till we reached the dumps of some people. He stood, as any one of you stands, behind a wall and urinated.

When pissing, it is preferably in squatting position, so as to minimise the drop of piss on the cloth/pants.
If not possible then, standing.
Anyway, it is done while facing away from the Qiblah (or direction of Makkah.)
The most important though is not the position of pissing, its cleaning yourself afterwards.
1st choice, we use water and choughing a little so that any residue of piss is getting out from the genitals and able to be cleanse.
2nd choice, If no water is available, then we use rough surface material of non-respectable material such as a stone 3 times, in getting rid of the filth.
3nd choice, it is most preferably using both method above.
And afterthat, we perform the Wudu',... in English we call it ablution. Just like we did before prayer times.
Cleanliness is of a great importance.

I'm a Woman but i think i know the answer to your question it's not a sin of course pee the way you feel more comfortable just dont be messy and be sure clean after that's all :)

Sitting down would be better or else you will mess the toilet and no one else can use it.
Sitting down will save your clothes from drops of urine flying all over. Your clothes get stained. Then you have to change your clthes to worship Allah. This is the whole idea behind it.
