On a recent question, some one asked if it would be "wrong" to name their French child Monique, considering that it's a stereotypical black name. Now, I kinda want to laugh, because I think that the name actually is French. But the thing that bugged me, was that they gave me a thumbs down when I told them how I felt. I said it was 2007. Name them what you want. Another black person, or someone with a darker avatar told her that it was French and they got a thumbs down.

:(

I just wanted to share my frustration.

I know someone by that name who is not black. She was born in Morocco of a French family and she and all her sisters have very French names. In fact none of the black people I know have the name Monique so it is not stereotypical anything..

Does that mean I am the next to get a thumbs down?

My friend's name is Chantal because her last name is French and he parents thought it sounded nice to have 2 French names.

She isnt black, but her surname and first name for some reason make people think she is. The are always shocked when they see a petite blonde with fair skin.
It doesnt bother her though. She just laughs about it. Its just one of those things. Her mom's name is Twila and she gets the same thing.

Chantal used to joke that if her son had been a girl, she wanted to name him Raven because she had to "carry on the tradition".

I like the name Monique, and I dont associate it with a black girl. Ive actually known several hispanic girls with that name and associate it with them, even though I know it is a French name.

Also, Ive found, especially on this board, that people tend to thumbs down anything they dont like. I asked one time about the name Im thinking of that is a very traditional name, and the comments were 5 to 1 positive, yet every positive comment had at least 2 thumbs downs from the nay-sayers not liking their comments.

They're stupid, ignore it. I honestly cant believe how ignorant people are. I'm a white girl dating a black guy and I get stares and comments all the time. Some kid the other day offered to give me his dark meat off his tray at lunch. I just said no thanks and smiled and sucked it up. Sorry for the thumbs down, here's a star.

That was me! People want to hear what they want to hear. The name is French, but ignorance usually rules in my experience.

Hey! Another thumbs down! No fair!

people are too quick with the thumbs down.

I know a white girl names Monique, but I don't know if her ancestors are from France.
