SO, Is that wierd? Do people do that? Am I allowed to do that or when I arrive will they be like " err, you're quite clearly not a backpacker ".

If you plan to stay at multiple hostels as you travel then you can actually get discounts in backpacker hostels throughout Australia, just get a NOMADS brochure from any backpacker or travel agency the discount card can be used in various hostels, you don't have to be a backpacker to stay at any hostels, but i suppose with the card you'd be classed as a backpacker, i stayed at many hostels when i travelled from Sydney to Cairns, a journey that took 2 years to complete as i had so much of an adventure.....good luck...
Happy travelling...

No of course not. My friends stayed in a few different backpackers hostels around Melbourne during the Commonwealth Games and they loved it. ( I stayed in a hotel and then a Caravan Park only because I'm picky)

na thats cool i met a few people doing that. you will prob have a great time too! dont turn up in a suit or with expensive luggage cos sometimes reception staff will be suspicious, like, why is this guy not in a hotel? what is he up to? they have to look after the welfare of guests y'know, cos you are sharing with people so there is a level of trust you have to have with other people in your room.
if you get into the swing of it all you will have a great time! i met a girl in brizzy who came up from melbourne doing exactly what you are doing. she enjoyed the life so much she took off in a car to Perth with some people she met there! went to explore her country!

btw, how do you 'clearly' identify a backpacker?
