We were running short of sand to rebuild the beaches in Miami and Tampa.
All our ammunition was getting old and musty and we needed to use it up before the expiration date.
A bunch of our planes and choppers were going to be retired and none of them had ever been in combat, we needed to see if they actually worked.
Saddam Hussein bet George Bush fifty bucks he was too chicken s**t to do it.
We were actually sending reinforcements to to Afghanistan, but they started running low on fuel and had to stop somewhere!
Bush and Rumsfeld were playing Risk against Cheney and
Powell; Bush told Rumsfeld to invade Iraq and Rumsfeld thought he meant for real.
We wanted to kick somebody's a55 but Iran's military was too wimpy so we picked Iraq to make it look better.
It seemed like a good idea at the time.

The United States Congress authorized the invasion into Iraq by US Forces with the knowledge the Iraq had weapons of mass destruction. This is the real reason as far as what is written on paper. Though, no WMDs were ever found in Iraq. Now we are fighting to free the Iraqi people and establish a democratic government.
Now you have all sorts of theories that will never be proven or disproven that you always hear at the office watering hole.
1. We invaded because there was an assassination attempt on Bush Sr, and Bush Jr didn't like that.
2. More Oil.
3. To fund the war industry
4. To have a better foot hold in the middle east to attack Iran.
Listed below are some of the more common mistakes on why we went to war.
1. Osma Bin Laden and Saddem were planning to attack the US.
2. To protect the citizens of the US from Iraq aggression.
3. 9-11 (Which is the reason for Afghanistan, not Iraq)
4. To stop terrorists over there before they come here.
This war, like many others, has had its mission changed several times and by the time we are done with it I will be very curious to see why we fought. Just like the civil war is greatly mistaken as the war to ender slavery, it was really was about Federal Government rights vs State Rights.

Initially, US invaded Iraq to rid the country of the reported weapons of mass destruction. It was argued that these weapons posed a threat to the US & it's allies. In January 2005, the Iraq Survey Group concluded that Iraq had ended its WMD programs in 1991 and had no WMD at the time of the invasion; although some misplaced or abandoned remnants of pre-1991 production were found, US Government spokespeople confirmed that these were not the weapons for which the US "went to war".
The next reason for invasion was the removal of Saddam Hussein and an attempt to establish a new democratic government.
Some would say the underlying reason of the invasion is to secure US interests in foregin oil.

Because Iraq invaded Kuwait in the either the late 80s or early 90s. After that, Saddam Hussein continued to violate his ceasefire agreement.

Oil.
All those WMD and al-quaida stories were just made up to sell this war. The 'proofs' for the weapons were actually photos of buildings and traincars with neat drawings of what might be in there and it's hard to believe that a five year old would fall for it not to speak of a seasoned analist. And Saddam Hussein handshaking with Bin-Laden is laughable at best.

A more subtle reason.
Blowback is the cause of terrorism. Blowback is caused by occupation.
The principal impetus for 9/11 was the presence of an American air base in Saudi Arabia, according to Al Queda.
We could not remove the base as long as we had to maintain the no-fly zone.
The only way to remove the base was to remove Sadam.
Which led to ... wait for it ... an even bigger occupation.

Oil, and if anyone tells you different they're only kidding themselves. Now if Iraq was the last country in the world to have oil, and our economy depended on it, sure, that'd be a great reason. As it stands though, it's rather lacking.

Because Iraqis deserve the same chance at freedom that we have and under Saddams rule there would never be a chance for peace.
