I say both.

And as most of the cops & firemen on here have said, I wouldn't do their job for any amount of money, but I love mine.

It is a calling for most of us in both careers. You either love it or hate it, there aren't a lot of people who just "give it a try" to see if they like it.....too much hard work, dedication and time to even get into that field.

As someone else said, my hat is off to all the firemen/women worldwide!!

I think that both occupations have their upsides. Both put themselves in danger daily to protect the general public. I'm biased, but I've seen my police officer boyfriend run into a burning building without all of the protection firefighters have because he thought there was someone inside. Police officers have a lot more random danger, and have to be prepared for anything. There are people behind the crimes they try to stop, and not many of those people are nice, upstanding citizens. They could be shot at by someone they put in jail years ago at any moment of any day. I know that being involved in law enforcement has made my boyfriend more paranoid (he calls it aware) than anyone I've ever met. But I feel safer around him than I would any fireman. :)

Both. Firemen risk their lives through burning to death and smoke inhalation to save people every day. Policemen risk getting shot at and killed to save lives every day. They each risk the ultimate sacrifice as simply "part of the job".

Im a police officer in Argentina...sometimes we do both jobs...(including taking injured people to hospital......our health sevice is not very efficient!!)
i know what is to go into a burning house because the firemen cant get there on time!!
And i will never forget.....the day a woman had her baby......in my squad!!!

Where I live, definitly the fire fighters. The cops around here don't do fck all, they just drive around, hang out at Tim Horton's and harass you if they see something on your car they don't like. Like I've been pulled over ALOT for no reason what so ever, I think they just get bored and harass people that aren't actually doing anything. One guy pulled me over one night and was like "Oh, I was just wondering what you were doing." I wanted to tell him to piss off!

I'm sure it's different in major cities. In that case both are the hero's. But I'd sure as heck would rather do what police do then run into a burning building.

Both, but don't forget paramedics. They often deal with the craziness that police officers often do from the public (drug overdoses, drunks, and of course the criminally insane).

It's more an 'individual ' kind of thing, but both risk their lives to save others.
