Environmentalism is just an understanding that people and all other things are interdependent. That our survival depends on the health of other people and all other living things. It is not new, however, in the history of mankind consumerism is new. It is not a religion, nor are there gods, it is just an appreciation that we rely on the ecosystem to survive and that the health of the Environment determines the health of all living things, including mankind.

Gaia is a greek goddess. Mother Earth (in many guises) is one of the oldest aspects of human religions.

in the case of "environmentalism" how are you defining religion?
faith - not required
unquestioning beleif - not required
divine judgement - not really, just cause & effect
prestigeous buildings & monuments - no
political influence as of right - no
instigating wars - no
holy book - no
only available to single race - no

"Gaia" is just the name James Lovelock used for the system of environmental & life feedback and control mechanisms.

Interesting question

it all depends on what a person's definition of religion and God is doesn't it?

Is this a new fad or obsession? Are we raising Gaea to celebrity type Idoltary?

Hope not...
But who knows eh?

Going green should be a great cause because we care for our future (and our kids or nieces,&nephews or our friends etc...) not some crazy cult scheme

kudos and hope you find what you're looking for

yeah, wiccans, or witches, i sometimes have more respect and admiration to them than any other religion though in islamic religion, Allah, most gracious, most high, stated that "He" sent down man to be the khalaifa (vicegerents, caretaker, or protector) of this earth and yet few muslims give emphasis on this issues.Allah, please forgive us or commute what is due according to your will.
