I'm thinking of moving to Poughkeepsie to be closer to my brother in Middletown, but want to know if Poughkeepsie is a safe, clean place to live first.

If you stay in the Town of Poughkeepsie (mainly south nearing the IBM/Route 9/Spackenkill/Galleria area) that is fine....as far north as the Holiday Inn on Route 9. If you HAVE to live in the City of Poughkeepsie, go to the Southside area (along Hooker Avenue, Wilbur Blvd. or near College or Raymond Avenue...but definitely closer to Vassar College). That part is called Arlington.

There is also a little pocket along Academy Street (closer to route 9 and Vassar Brothers hospital) that is actually nice. But as you keep going north, that part of Academy is a crap area!

DO NOT consider the Main Street area and DEFINITELY STAY AWAY from Northside (Smith Street, any street with a N. with it). Those are the bad parts of Poughkeepsie. There is a tiny pocket along Union Avenue that is the historic district...that is okay if you don't want to travel far to get to the Poughkeepsie train station.

Tony's dead on. (Shout out to the Red Foxes!) You DO NOT want to live in the city of Poughkeepsie. It's as bad as the city of Middletown - if not worse. North to the Hyde Park area is okay, and south towards Wappingers Falls is also okay.
