I was setting at the computer the other night and I turned my head side ways and I felt pain in my neck, so I felt where the pain was and there was a lump. It's about the size of a quater and it's pretty painful. I'd been feeling like I was getting a cold for about a week before I noticed it. It hurts when I swallow and when touched it feels like I'm touching a nerve or something. I don't know it's complicating and scary...will it go away or should I go to the doctor?

It is a swollen Lymph Node. Basically it is full of dead virus and dead white blood cells that have been fighting your infection (cold). It swells because of the huge numbers of cells from the infection. It will go away. One thing I do is to rub across the lump DOWNwards never upwards. you need the right pressure, too little moves only a little of this waste build up and too much pressure can be painful and irritate your skin. Using a lotion or Vicks helps.

I am not a medical doctor but I have experienced this as well. Most likely it is a swollen lymph node.

Check this out:

Web MD: Lymph Node

"Lymph nodes often swell in one location when a problem such as an injury, infection, or tumor develops in or near the lymph node. Which lymph nodes are swollen can help identify the problem.

* The glands on either side of the neck, under the jaw, or behind the ears commonly swell when you have a cold or sore throat. Glands can also swell following an injury, such as a cut or bite, near the gland or when a tumor or infection occurs in the mouth, head, or neck."

While probably not serious I recommend seeing a physician. If you are a student go see the school nurse.

I say, Be safe and feel better, see the doctor.

I have had those and they always turned out to be swollen lymph nodes from some minor infection or cold.

They are annoying but if you go to a doctor you will just hear "You have some swelling on your lymph nodes. That will go away without any treatment. Pay the receptionist on the way out."

Your lymph nodes are swollen. It is from being sick. You should go to the doctor in order to get antibiotics to get you well. When you start getting well, the lump as you call it will go down. Mine do this all of the time. It is nothing to worry about. My son's did this once, and it was so bad his whole jaw on that one side was swollen. It is just your lymph nodes.

Your lymphatic system filters the clear fluid in your blood and the nodes in the neck may serve as repositories for bacteria etc. This may result in swelling or soreness. If you have been ill that is a probable cause, you might want to see a doctor if it still painful in a few days.
