A Metal frame , pulleys and cables for the motion side and counterweights if you have to make it extend the arm of the carrying load.

Use ABS plastic from a hobby store. it is easy to work with, can be cut with carpentry tools, shaped with a hair dryer or in an oven at 225 degF, and joined using ABS cement from a hardware store.
what do you have to pick up?1/8 inch ABS is strong enough to lift several pounds.
if you can't use tires, how do you intend for it to move? I have tank tracks in my store. check out the RC tank project in my projects section.
feel free to email me if you have other questions.

Use stainless steel. Or just use any sort of metal. its heavy duty and will be able to easily lift all sorts of weight if you buold it properly.
