George Washington was from Virginia (a state filled with slave run plantations) and found his army populated with black soldiers. The institution of slavery tried to justify itself by saying that white people were just naturally and scientifically "better" than black people. How do you think Washington felt when he saw his army had black soldiers?

There were Black Americans who fought for the Continental Army, but not very many. Most Blacks who fought in the American Revolutionary War fought for the British. Since Slavery was illegal in Britain by that time, it was a better gamble than fighting for the Colonists who still tended to favor slavery (both in the North and in the South).

George Washington himself did not like the institution of slavery. although he never publicly criticized the institution. He made provision in his will that his slaves be freed upon the death of his wife, Martha, or when her own slaves were freed. He did this in order to prevent slave families from being broken up. George Washington was the only slave-holding founding father to emancipate his slaves.

His change of view, bringing him to his dislike of slavery was a direct result of his friendship with the Marque De Lafayette. The Marque was, of course French, and the French had long had an abhorrence of slavery.

I don't know which teacher has tried to lead you into some belief that there were a great many black soldiers in the Continental Army under George Washington. There weren't.
There were units of black soldiers who fought for the Union in the War Between the States. But, Washington was long dead by then.

black soldiers in the continenal army were few and mostly given for the cause by their owners, to serve because the owners either were in poor health or already had their plantations burned by the british, the black soldiers were paid the same rate as the rest of the soldiers
