i am a Christian. i've been one for almost 2 years. but, i have some problems...its about nonchristian music. i have a list of nonchristian songs that i really like:
"SOS"
"Deliah"
"Cold"
"Face Down"
"Colors"
"Wishes"
songs like that. i also listen to Christian bands, like:
Skillet
Hawk Nelson
Reliant K
Barlow Girl
Superchick
Toby Mac
Steller Cart
(thats only 1/3 of the Christian bands i listen to)
my problem is that i dont feel bad about listening to nonchristian songs, but should i? i don't like songs that sing about s3x, rape, murder, crap like that, but where do you think i should draw the line? i like the songs that say, do your best, help others, and of coarse, love. whats wrong with that? please answer, it would be nice to hear other Christians opinions. thanks.

Keep praying about this, God will show you what to do. I can tell you from personal experience that when I stick to Christian music, I feel closer to God, and when I listen to alot of secular music I begin to drift away, even to the point of forgetting to pray and not going to church, not to mention the thoughts it can put into your head. .I think music has a lot of spiritual significance, probably more than we actually realize. We "feed" our spirit through what we see and hear, just like we feed our bodies with what we eat and drink" So it comes down to asking yourself "what do I want to feed my spirit?'
Also, " Who was the (band) leader in Heaven before he was cast out?"

I have never heard of any of the songs or any of the bands you've mentioned. I generally avoid Christian music because most of it is canned and has very little musical or lyrical variety; and if you lump all "non-Christian" music with mainstream pop, then you're shooting yourself in the foot. There's a wide, wide world out there beyond the Top 40 and the crap you hear on the radio (I almost NEVER listen to the radio anymore). Don't limit yourself.

Good question! Coming from someone who loves music, I listened to all my music, plus my inspirational music, for awhile, then decided I wanted to seperate myself from anything that might interfere in growing more mature and strong in the Lord. I find that when you give up a few things, God will Bless you and strengthen you in a lot of things. I see so many people that say, oh, there is nothing wrong,, with this or that, and when you start to give in to the little things, it is not too long before you start giving in to the bigger things. I am not saying what you are doing is wrong, I am only answering from my own experiences, and what I have seen happen to others. You seem to be grounded in your Faith, and I think you are fine, I just have went through the same thing, and just wanted to comment as another sister in Christ. :)

I like Skillet too, but do not know the others. I also like Newsboys as their word play and theology is top notch.
I like a lot of songs that are secular and some to call them coarse is a joke. Gorillaz, Sigur ros, Shins, and many many more. I do try to focus on ones that do not go with explicit lyrics. I do still like some of the "rage" ones like Korn puts out but again it depends on what they are saying. Many I liked as a kid I later found the deeper meaning and I do not listen to them. The line should be drawn on things that make you think on the good things in life and not the bad. It is a tough call and prayer should be your first option. Think on the lyrics and pray about them. If you feel guilty do not listen and visa versa.

I listen to all the nonchristian and christian bands you listed. It is good u dont listen to songs about sex and murder. All u have to do is make sure the song isnt telling people bad messages or things that contradict the Bible. trust me on this one i asked my pastor.

Basically, it is Not the Music but "The Message in the Music"---the Words.
When you begin to Walk in Faith, you find out that "Faith" will only work with The Word of GOD.
The Word of GOD (Jesus) is The Hope of hopes.
Jesus is The Most Positive (TruthFull) Message of Hope you will Ever Find anywhere.
The Promises of GOD to HIS Kids (US Born-Agains) has no Doubt, Unbelief, Negative's in it AT ALL.
Jesus IS The Word of GOD.
Now, the Problem with Non-Jesus Music, is that the Youngen's do not Know Enough to Seperate the Good Music (yes, it is good music written by Human Beings) from the Negatives (Errors) that come along with "Worldly Music".
So, Inadvernately, the Good Music opens up your Mind for "Errors" (words of doubt, unbelief, negatives) and GOD's Kids don't even Realize that Doubt and Unbelief is comning into Their Minds!!
The Apostle Paul said to RENEW your MIND to The Word of GOD---not doubt and unbelief and error and negatives.
See?
I like to Listen to the Old Music (60's and70's) then "Convert them to Christianity!!! :)
But, I have Spent Alot of Time in the Word!!!
Studying to Show MySelf Approved!
I can do this Thing---GOD even Shows me the Errors in those Songs.
But, I like the Music and I Convert'em!!!
I Write songs too!
Then, GOD just out right Gives me Songs, Good'ns too!
So There!!!
p.s. There are some songs (hardcore WORLDLY songs) that I dont' even care to listen to.
Kinda' like People, Some People will Never Get Saved---and Some Songs I just wont' Listen too.
Hope this helps.

This is a question that a lot of people struggle with and the best I can come up with from the Bible is where do your thoughts go when you are listening to those songs or artists ? I f they are not taking you away from the Lord or causing you to think unholy thoughts then I cant find a problem with them. We are called to worship the Lord in word thought and deed and if your music doesn't take away from that then enjoy that is your freedom in Christ.

The Holy spirit is the spirit of Truth. I think there are non Christian songs that are more full of TRUTH than the Christian ones at times. I don't think you should allow yourself to be legalistic about this. I think if music draws you closer to God listen to it.....if it drives you away from God and his word don't! The bible says rid yourself of Anger........I almost always listen to Christian but sometimes I just need to I don't know, listen to something else. I really like Neil Diamond....and just various songs from the 70's and 80's it gives me joy to sing along with them. You know if music is dark and demonic just by the mood it puts you in. If it feeds anger, hatred, Lust or Revenge or self pity it's not good.

I don't know any of the songs you mentioned. But I understand I think it is OK to listen to other types of music as long as they don't do any thing against the Bible.
BTW those Christian bands you talked about are awesome. I have seen all except stellar cart, reliant K and superchick live.

Its the same thing as watching anti-christ movies like the golden ccompass,
It is OK if you listen to the songs for the entertianment.
But its different if you listen because you believe in the message...
And with songs that aren't anti-christ, but don't have some sort of chirstain message, that totally fine.
Enjoy the music
