Is it true that dog flea powders are harmful to cats?

If so, which one do I use?Does anybody know the side effects (if ever) of dog flea powders on cats?

I learned the answer to this question the hard way. Many years ago I accidentally put hartz flea product for dogs on my cats. One died that day and the other was in intensive care for 3 days. It took weeks for her to return to normal. Cats have a different reaction to pyrethrins (permethrin) than dogs. I don't know why, just that they do and it is often fatal and always expensive unless you just let them die. In recent years I was employed by a vet and found that many people make this mistake. The cats usually become paralyzed, but have constant twitches or seizures. It isn't a pleasant thing to witness. It's worse when you know that you caused it and it could have been avoided. The best thing to do is consult your vet about the product most suited to your cat and it's needs. Most of what they will recommend will cost more than what you buy over the counter at the store, but these products work better and are worth the expense in the long run, you also don't have to worry about using something that will harm your cat then.

Yes it certainly is. Never use ANY products intended for dogs, on cats. No exceptions. Cats and dogs have differing sensitivities - many things safe for dogs can be deadly to cats.

In fact, even cat flea powders can be dangerous to cats!! Stay away from all store-bought flea treatments if you actually want to kill fleas and keep your pets safe.

Go to a vets and pick up some proper flea treatment if you need some, like Frontline. They will give the appropriate pack for a cat.

read the label, if it says not to use on cats, don't put it on your cat. the same goes for any medication that you'd give your dog, if the label says not to give to a cat, DON'T! many dog only products have ingredients in them that will seriously harm, or even kill your cat.

cats can die from certain ingredients. They can cause kidney failure, seizures and death. Please use only appropriate products where both cats and dogs may be int he home. When in doubt, check with your vet.
