I watch Cops on Saturday nights on Fox, and some of the things they do seem unprofessional to me, they also seem a little more 'casual' then the idea of a police officer should be. Like when a guy steals a car but then decides to surrender and gets out and assumes the surrendering position, all the cops tackle and fight him like the guy is still running or resisting, when he is surrendering! Anyways, I was thinking that cops shouod have more of a military discipline training and maintenence. Perhaps the National Guard should police the streets, wouldn't that be a good idea, maybe not Military Police but the president can invent a new MOS relating to a police officer?

or perhaps there should be a police force branch of the military, kind of like the national guard except they only do policing, and only work in the United States.

Police force should be like the military...........In for four years and then your out.
I would still be a civilian police dept. but you would not be able to stay in for more than four years.
It has nothing to do with a military state or Nazi mentality.........

Hey.... a military dictatorship! What a great idea! It works so well in other countries .....we should try that here!! Along with the police force being replaced by military....the president can just give himself the title of general!

Besides....the military does not have enough to do...with policing Afghanistan and Iraq. The military had to lower their standards to meet recruitment quotas...but hey, that's OK - we can have less qualified people policing our streets.

(please note: sarcasm).

PS. You are aware that quite a few of the cops are also reservists and national guardsmen. Many small communities have been struggling with how to deal with their cops getting called up to go police Iraq or Afghanistan.

Most cops (like soldiers) are honorable med and women who work too hard - risk their lives for too little money and not enough thanks. Just because there are a few bad apples out there - you don't cut the whole apple tree down.

The tactics you are complaining about - were put into place to protect the officers. If replaced with military - they would use the same tactics. The soldiers in Iraq just don't have Fox following them around.

1st, what you don't know is that one of the MOST DANGEROUS times for any police officer is when he handcuffs someone, so they will not take a chance with any felon, many officers have been shot or killed by a suspect who has given up. Second, it may not look good, but it is actually being done using techniques that they have been trained on.

Most police officers are former military and have military disipline, which is why you don't see them beat the crap out of the guy, once they have him in custody and subdued.

The reason it is not a good idea to have a National Police force is that it gives too much authority to one agency.

First of all since you are familiar with "MOS", it sounds like you either are, or were military. The "civilian" police as you refer them as, are considered "para-military" and often receive military oriented training in both discipline and performance. Second the military cannot be used for law enforcement, period, except catastrophic circumstances. Look up the "Posse Comitatus Act", for more details.

they already use military tactics. no we should not do away with civilians, we should make them more accountable when they do make mistakes and have more internal affairs people who really do their job.
