no, you can't keep your weapon - other things you can keep
but, m-16 ammo can be purchased at your local gun store
5.56mm
or .223
you can own a fully automatic weapon - but legal ones are incredibly expensive - and require a special background check that takes months to complete.

Weapons areproperty of the US Military. You are issued a weapon at each duty station. Once your enlistment is up, the weapon stays with the unit.

You learn how to clean, and fire your weopon which is a M-16A2 rifle. After boot camp you are issued a weapon when you get to your unit, however you must keep in the armory untill you go to range or are deployed. As for other weapons such as knifes you are not supposed to keep those in the barracks if they are a certain length they are supposed to be checked in to armorey also. This is only the marine corps rules i do not know about any other branch.

I was allowed to keep my M-16, but very few were as you had to pass several mental evaluations and background checks in order to do so. I have several other military weapons and am part of an elite force to off-set the home-grown terrorists here...should they decide to get stupid and pull another stunt against the American people on American soil!

Your neighbor doesn't have an M16/A1/A2 Rifle, unless he got it illegally. You can't legally buy an M16/A1/A2.
He probably has an AR-15, which looks like an M16/A1/A2, but it is not fully automatic.
