i am running injector cleaner in the fuel in hopes of a carbon deposit holding valve open. i have been told a burnt valve in this 2.9 inline six is very rare. any ideas? thanks to all the people who offered answers to my first question, helped me get to this point.

a burned vales in this engine is very rare
[unless precipitated by a lean condition caused by a leaking intake boot]
however if it is a carbon build up problem, i would recommend a B.G. products decarbonizing treatment, rather than hoping for a "fuel tank additive cure". i have saved numerous[many makes] engines by doing this, the ones it did not save and required a valve job were at least clean when pulled apart for repair.

squirt some oil into the cylinder and see if the compression increases noticeably. If so then you are looking at ring or cylinder wear. If not then bring both valves so that they are on the compression stroke and then add air to the cylinder. Air leaking out the exhaust or the intake manifold would suggest a valve issue. It is best to back off the valve adjustment to insure that the valves are really closed.

it could also be a broken piston ring or burnt pipston. $$$
