Ignore him. He's only making himself look like an ***. You don't even have to slap him. Trust me, he'll offend the wrong person and end up with a bloody nose. It's only a matter of time. What I don't understand, however, is why, of all religions, does he have a problem with Buddhism? The ones I know are very peaceful and loving people who don't try to force their beliefs on others. This guy needs some counseling. Send him my way, I'm new at it and need patients.

I agree that he is annoying. But I have to agree with him that he is exercising freedom of speech. Speech is not free if it is not free to offend people.

Now. Is his speech appropriate to the classroom? Probably not. If he is disturbing your studies or your ability to listen in class, it does not matter much what he is saying.

Ask him if he has read the Heart Sutra? I would be curious why he is so anti-Buddhist. Why did he choose that religion to hate? I suspect there is a story there.

Eh. He's right about freedom of speech. You can say whatever you want, even if it does offend people. Hate speech, though, rallying people to violence is probably not covered by the bill of rights. Still, people are allowed to hate other religions. Let him hate a religion he doesn't understand--as Buddhism is really hard to hate when you get to know it.

An acquaintance at college pretty much said the same thing about Buddhists being stupid and being duped by the devil. I asked him if he even knew anything at all about Buddhism and he said that everything he knew about the religion had been taught to him by a Catholic priest in his world religion class. When I pressed him for information he couldn't explain anything about the religion at all. It's like having Pat Robertson tell you that if you practice yoga that you are going to hell and are opening yourself up to the demons. Or even better yet, I went to an auction in New York state and a woman won a box of items including a statue described as being the Buddha by the auctioneer. It wasn't even the Buddha at all but a copy of one of the Terracotta Warriors from China. The woman refused to even take it home and told me that if she had it in the house that it would bring the devil or demons. So much for my trying to tell her about art history! Ahh blissful ignorance! You can either ignore the ignoramus or you can ask him if you even understands anything about the religion at all. My guess is that he is not worth talking to and won't change his view ever. Just realize that you are more understanding of world religions and people than he will ever be and that gives you an advantage in life.

Do you know why he is anti-Buddism? He probably doesn't even understand Buddism. Yes, his reaction is stereotypical and prejudice.

Although he has the "freedom of speech" to express his own views, he doesn't have to be rude or offensive.

I firmly believe that all people should have Religious Freedom and be accepted for who they are.

You're wrong about the freedom of speech part, people are allowed to say anything they want even if it offends other.

He has the right to be offensive in his speech, as long as he's not out murdering Buddhists. (This is rather odd; Buddhists are quite peaceful, generally, and don't usually inspire hate.) The guy's an idiot. Ignore him. He's going for shock value. Don't give him the satisfaction.

Avoid him. Anyone who attacks another religion has that right under freedom of speech but isn't necessarily excerising good judgement in how they are expressing those opinions.

There's a difference between "Freedom of Speech" and "Hate Speech". He is using hate speech.

If he continues, I strongly recommend telling a teacher or advisor.

Free speech is not contingent on whether or not it will offend someone. He's right, it is free speech and he does have the right to express his opinion wherever he wants. Granted, he's completely lacking in tact, style or intelligence, but he does (apparently) know at least PART of the first amendment.
