any idea what i'm doing wrong? i'd looked at a few vids on youtube and i've found a few problems with my technique

(i'd fallen into the wide hook problem, so i'm gonna practice the short sharp hooks for a few days non-stop)

another problem i noticed was when i hook my knuckles are horazontal - not vertical | Dunno if this could be one of the reasons i'm spraining my wrist or not.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

what martial art are you in? if you are in boxing, thai boxing, kickboxing, mma well anything that requires gloves/wrapping....wrap your hands differently or get better gloves.(when i got better gloves it made the world of difference.)

i perfer to hook with my hands vertical in my opinion your hand is more stable this way. try it with your hands vertical and if it makes a difference.

also if you are just starting out your body is conditioning. to build of strength and learn how to stabilize your wrist try doing push ups on your knuckles also my coach has us hit the punching bag with our gloves off(NOT full force) just to get use to getting proper punching techique without the gloves

Hand wraps would be it, as would sort or comply with via, however I realize from enjoy that so most of the time I form jam/sprain my wrist on a heavy bag by means of attending to into it. I lose a little bit consciousness and throw a punch out because the bag is returning to me (as such a lot heavy luggage sway from punching). Throwing even a mild punch at a sixty pound item coming at you is calling for disorders. Is this probably what is going on with you? If it is not this or one of the different matters stated, then I'm stumped. Also, what is performed is completed, understanding the purpose will aid you to hinder it from going down once more. Get it looked at and allow it heal competently. Use it minimally to certainly not till it's higher.

I think you're probably using your shoulders to throw a hook instead of using your hips, that's why you have a hard time turning your fist into a vertical position. Try practicing the Muay Thai elbow strike and try to hit the bag with tip of your elbow, do this by creating a whipping motion beginning with a quick turn of your hips and your elbow follows kinda like a whip. When you've mastered this, try it again this time with your fist, drive your hips into it, but instead of the tip of your elbow hitting the bag, it's your vertically positioned fist that hits it, the idea is to let your waist generate the motion that whips your fist into a hook. As long as you're pushing your fist with your shoulders instead of pushing your fist into the target with your hips, you'll have a hard time maintaining the vertical fist position.

im not sure what the problem would be but if your hurting your wrist, maybe its because your not making a tight enough fist, when you hook make sure you elbow is bent close to a 90 degrees angle and make sure to put ur waist and body into it, good luck

hooks your knuckle are supposed to vertical. also WRAP YOUR WRISTS I can not say it enough. You can break your wrist by not wrapping them then never be able to hit anything hard again
