When we got our cat she was supposed to have been spayed. We had her for a year, and now she's in HEAT. She's over a year and a half old, so we were suprised she hadn't had a heat prior to this (having not been spayed). My husband and I are arguing because we can't get her in to the vet to be spayed until next week because of the holidays and our vet being booked up. My husband wants to keep her locked in our back utility room because she's peeing on things. I hate the smell of cat pee too, but I hate to keep her locked up all that time (she's already been in there for 3 days). She has access to her litterbox, food and fresh water, but I hate it. Every time we let her out she ends up peeing on something within a few minutes. We live in military housing, so this is a HUGE no no. What can I do?! I'd hate to leave her locked in there but I absolutely can't take her peeing everywhere (and all the yowling all night).
Help please!

Also, can I avoid anyone calling me irresponsible? She has wonderful veterinary care, and they were just as suprised as we were. BTW, we're going to be shelling out $200+ for this spay.... So please, no finger-pointers.

She won't pee on anything except fabric. Our back room in all linoleum. She's not peeing on her blanket for some reason.

I would never point fingers. I had the same thing happen with me. I took in a cat, and though she wasn't in heat, she was PREGNANT. So, I understand. Following pregnancy she went in and out of heat in 3 week intervals.

I feel for you, I really do. My advice, considering the circumstances, would be to confine her to an area which she can't completely ruin. Unfortunately, too, the urine from a female cat in heat has an extremely strong odor; it's not just the normal urine. Keep her in a secluded area, where she can't get out and get pregnant and that she can't ruin from her urine. I know it seems so inhumane and unfair. The yowling at night is annoying, but is insignificant compared to the spraying of the urine.

I'm sorry to say that I would keep her in an area where she can't spray furniture, carpet, clothing, etc. It would break my heart too, but it's probably the best bet.

Good Luck!

P.S. -- Research some spay/neuter programs. There are places that provide vouchers or coupons for spaying. Check it out. That way the spay won't be soooo costly.

I think your husband is right. While she's in there, make sure to clean all of the places she has peed with Nature's Miracle or something similar, then after she's been spayed, keep her in the utility room for a few more days until all of the hormones have settled down. That way,she won't be tempted to pee everywhere again. Also, she's safer in the utility room,as she won't be able to sneak outside and possibly get pregnant or lost.

What the others said. She's a frustrated cat trying to get the males to come by peeing everywhere.

Once she's spayed, she'll stop that right away. Keep her confined, but by all means go in and keep her company too, so she won't feel so alone.

supply her the bathing room. save your pennies and get her spayed. Cats are precipitated ovulators. meaning that she will circulate out and in of warmth until eventually she is bred. meaning she would be in warmth each and each month until eventually you get her spayed. Is that incentive adequate to no longer circulate to the flicks, no longer drink or circulate out in the subsequent month so which you have the money to get the surgery achieved>?

It'd be better to leave her in there...they will charge you for new carpet if she leaves any stains or odors. I know it's hard but it's the best thing! Good luck!
