Think about picking up a RIA (Rock Island Arsenal) 1911. They are a super high quality imported (from the Phillapines) 1911. They are so good, that STI has started building their "Spartan" weapons on RIA frames. Heck, you have to go the the "rigamarole" of an FFL transfer with the frame, might as well get the whole wepon while you are at it.
I have one, and LOVE IT.

boker_magnum is correct. Brownells has a large selection of frames and 1911 parts. I got all my stuff from them when I built my 1911.

I get the occasional request for a 1911 frame from my customers. Brownells is a good source. Numrich also has them.

You will need an FFL to get one, or have someone with an FFL to get it for you, then transfer it to you like if it were a complete gun. According to the BATF, the receiver is a complete gun. Midway has them in their catalog. Go to midwayusa.com
