How is it possible that people can buy into the ridiculous idea that the Catholic Church didn't begin until after 300 AD?
Christ’s Church is Catholic. Catholic comes from a compound of two Greek words: “kato” = according to, and “holos” = the one. Christ’s Church is for all, and all are one: the Body of Christ. It is like speaking the name “Jesus”: Christ’s name was Yeshua, not Jesus. But we say Jesus because it came to us through the Greek language, which is what the New Testament was written in. The same goes for the word “catholic”.
Was Christ’s Church hierarchical? Yes. He chose twelve apostles, made Peter the leader, and gave them authorities that all the other disciples did not have. Later, in the book of Acts, the hierarchy develops further. The apostles appoint Deacons (greek - diakonos / διάκονος ), Priests (greek - presbyteros / πρεσβυτερος ), and Bishops (greek - episkopos / επίσκοπος ), and each have different duties. It is the same today in the Catholic Church

A good read is Eusebius of Caesarea's “Historia Ecclesiastica” (Church History) written BEFORE the year 325 AD. In it, he traces not only the successors of Peter (the bishops of Rome) but also the successors of the other apostles. He was much closer to the time than we are, as are the other early Christian writers.
The fact is that only the Catholic Church has existed since the time of Jesus. Every other Christian church is an offshoot of the Catholic Church. The Eastern Orthodox churches broke away from unity with the pope in 1054. The Protestant churches were established during the Reformation, which began in 1517. (Most of today’s Protestant churches are actually offshoots of the original Protestant offshoots.) Only the Catholic Church existed in the tenth century, in the fifth century, and in the first century, faithfully teaching the doctrines given by Christ to the apostles, omitting nothing.
Okay: Comments anyone?

Though I am an Atheist, I'm on your side.
I believe that anyone who isn't a part of the Catholic Church is just fooling themselves to an extreme degree. I'm a strong Catholic advocate, and always defend the Catholic Church when I see it being attacked by a Fundamentalist.
People deny that the Catholic Church has been around for the 2000 years since Christ's death, but myself, as a Historian, and of the Roman Republic none the less, know the truth.
Why do I defend the Catholic Church? Because my personal philosophy is: If you're not going to bother to do something correctly, then don't bother to do it at all.

INRI is an acronym for Iesus Nazorean Rex Iudea - that's latin for Jesus of Nazoreth, King of the Jews - that is the "crime" that Jesus was once charged with. Comments: Thanks for addressing this. It is so annoying when I hear things such as, "Constantine started the Catholic Church!" sigh Will they ever learn?
edit: No (for the one millionth time) Catholics do not worship Mary, the Saints, or the Pope. We respect them, we ask for their intercession, we have a special connection with Mary, end of story. No worship. No idolatry.
edit: Also, Ignatius (I think it was Ignatius), a disciple of John, used the word 'Catholic' to describe the Church around 100 B.C., and used it as if it had been around for a long time.
edit:Aww, did they delete your Q on abortion? Go figure.

The answer I like the best came from the atheist, Dr. Kemp, lol! Crusader, you're just talking about plain simple history. What is so hard about this for people to see? Do they not know how to read?
I've been saying for the longest time that learning the history of Christianity is nothing more than a history lesson, which inevitably leads someone to the Catholic Church. You don't even have to be a believer, like Dr. Kemp, to understand this. Just goes to show how prejudice and bias can so strongly push the truth away.
God bless.

Yes, Jesus did appoint people similarly to how the Catholic Church does now. But he did with the intent that the focus would remain on Jesus Christ as God and King, and not on other Idols, such as the Pope, Mary, Saints, and other distracting and perverted traditions. The original Catholic church may have been Christ church, but the Catholic church as it has evolved to today is in most cases a hindrance to salvation.

At what point was the first stone of the first dedicated Catholic Church laid? I'm struggling here......at what point does it change from a nomadic religious movement to a grounded church with a physical headquarters and geographically stable roots? How do you define a Church, is the question I should probably ask..... from your reading it would appear that simply living according to Jesus automatically creates a church....so why have all the big shiny buildings?
