i just got this, and frankly i'm a little surprised.
-I just received an e-mail warning about an upcoming movie for children in December. It's called "The Golden Compass" and stars Nicole Kidman. I don't know if you have heard anything about it. It will be advertised as a normal children's film but in the end it is trying to teach children that there is no God. It is based off of a trilogy of children's books and the author is called Philip Pullman. They evidently do some strange things in the movie and at the very end a girl and a boy are supposed to be depicting Adam and Eve, and then they kill God. They are trying to be very mild about it through the movie until the end, so a lot of parents won't even know that it's coming. Also, it will be promoting his books so you may want to become familiar with the author's name and the books that he writes!
I was astonished that someone would make a movie like this and direct it towards children!!-
your thoughts?

shouldn't atheists have the same right to make movies as anyone else?

It's a movie from 3 books. Pure escape fantasy.
If parents are not living up to their responsibilities I'm sure the children are dealing with larger issues and will survive going to a movie.
Children have good parents (and some have bad parents) - they all grow up eventually to be productive adults - due to their own internal drive, and desires/goals. Reality has more danger than a fantasy movie.

Obviously if people hold to a cheished belief and it is attacked then they would not be inclined to support it. People who are saying it is just a movie probably are not holding strong views of Christianity. If something they were into was attacked they would probably not want to support it either. I made up my mind this week that I would not spend money to see the Golden Compass. No one told me to do that it was my own decision. If another Christian goes to see the film that is up to him or her. I would not tell them they should not see it. I would just tell them what I know about it. This is a topic for a person's own conviction since the Bible does not prohibit a beliver from seeing movies in general. They may want to evaluate further. I have read several articles about it and seen the promo (the first 5 minutes) and i know enough to know what it is about. Animals are called demons in the opening intro of the film. Animals which are depicted as pets or friends are being passed as as a demon which would make younger childern more accepting of the idea of demons. If there is an organized boycott so what? Is there not freedom of the press and freedom to not partake in some of that press also? If this movie is not a big financially grossing picture then it will persuade some movie producers not to make these kinds of movies. I just hope people who boycott have their own pesonal understanding about the movie otherwise they will not seem that rational to protest something they may not understand.

The Golden Compass is great book, read it, and the movie looks like it follows the book. If they don' t there should be an angry mob because these people have had 11 years science the book came out in 1994.In 2002 they began so now five years of making it. It better follow the book well. If not and you see the movie and not read the book read it. It is a very good book. It is book one of His Dark Materials. The second book is the Subtle Knife and the tried The Amber Spyglass

I find it strange that anyone would have a problem with this, it's fantasy, not reality, first off, second off religious themes are extremely common in children's literature almost never with any forewarning... for example: Narnia, Anne of Green Gables, Little house on the prairie, little women, and on and on. Why is it a problem for a children's story to be anti-god but not for so many to be pro-god? I was raised in a strict atheist house hold but still read all of the above listed books growing up, they didn't convert me. Heck most kids read at least some greek and roman myths, I'd think that strictly religious Christian folks would be more concerned with that then one atheistic story...

I personally never read the books, but know they have won a couple of children literacy awards. So how bad can it be? And it is probably overtones that kids won't even notice in the movie. I mean christians find what they want in the bible, why not pick out and twist things in the movie just to have something rant about?

The author is supposedly an Atheist and has taken great lengths to rather belligerently shout from the rooftops that there is no God. The question then becomes "if there is no God, then why kill Him in the end of the movie".
Just a thought
and no - I won't go to see the movie (to answer your question) and not because I would boycott something like this... but because I rarely go to the movies anyway and so choose the titles carefully.

EDIT: I've seen the trailer... It looks alot like a cross between the Lord of the Rings and the Lion Witch and Wardrobe. I haven't read the book and couldn't possibly guess at the content, but it does look like a rather rousing movie at that.... now if I could just get past the thought of enduring Kidman (dreary actress), I just MIGHT go see it.... ;)

I have read the book. The book is not mainly focusing on God and the Church. The book does have a God in it though. The book mostly talks about conflicts between good and evil. I don't think it is that bad that nobody should watch it, but it does talk abut the Church being the "bad guy" I'm wathcing it.

from the trailers I've seen it looks like a great film and I can't wait to see it.
I don't know why all the fuss, its just a children's book! It's Harry Potter all over again isn't it.
If anyone has read Douglas Adams Hitchhikers Guide to the Universe, he proves the nonexistence of god, but no one kicked up a fuss!

ok. first the book is an incredible book. is it anti-religion. yes. but thats just like The Chronicles of Narnia and how they are religious. And it isnt trying to teach kids anything. The religious aspects have been taken out of the movie. Things like this truly frustrate me, because Philip Pullman is one of the greatest authors currently. I know many Christians who have read his books, and while they dont agree, are astounded and love them. Dont critisize what you don't understand. Feel free to email me.

Well, we've all gotten the one about the movie depicting Christ and His Disiples as gay men. I'll watch the golden compass none the less (I'm Christian) and judge for myself. I go into the movies doscerning fact from fiction, and since I know what I believe it shouldn't be a problem. If the kids want to watch it, you just talk to them. If a parent thinks its wrong to watch such, then they need to figure out why their faith (or kid's faith) is waning.
