Unless it's one of those highbrow, $25-for-a-salad restaurants, It's normally acceptable. Italian restaurants, run and owned by REAL Italians, take it as a compliment. If you eat at my house, and clean the plate with your bread, that means you liked what I fed you!

i couldnt agree more. Italians take it as a compliment when leave your plate spotless, it means the meal was great.
in some homes though, it might let someone think that your still hungry, and the meal didnt fill you up. But in this case, its a compliment.

Regardless of who is Italian and who is not, I've never read that wiping the plate with bread is anything but bad mannered.

Is it wrong to clean your plate with bread?.......Remaining sauce of each dish may be eaten with a spoon or sopped up with small bits of bread, which are then eaten with a fork.

As long as you're tactful about it, I don't see why it'd be a problem. I personally don't do it, but my husband does. What really drives me crazy is people who scrape their plates with the fork.

No, as long as your tasteful about it. Bread is severed with the meal do you can take advantage of the sauces.
I would say you can get away with it in any resteraunt that Celebrities don't eat in. :)

Only if the restaurant is picking up the tab and asks you not to.
Otherwise enjoy what you paid for the way you wish.

I've seen people doing that at very exquisite restaurants....whether it's right or wrong is probably up to the individuals dining near them.

With all the answers you have here, I am at a loss. I was taught that this was okay at home, but not in any restaurant.
