Take only cash with you when you go shopping; or just get a prepaid cash card for the amount that it is safe for you to spend.

Well if I were in your situation I would buy a pre-paid Visa or American Express card . Look for ones that you can reload or it may be even better if you buy four or five 50 dollar cards. They have them from 25 to 500 dollars. Keep those cards at home and only take one prepaid card along with your Identification. This should help control your spending because your credit and cash is difficult to access. Remember to make sure that you have an emergency card with you in your car. Reward yourself each time you are successful in controlling your spending. Hope that helps :)

There may be more to your spending habits than just being unable to manage money responsibly; buying things you KNOW you can't afford and feeling a lack of control in stopping this behavior IS a Psychiatric issue. Overspending in this manner is one of the classic signs of Bipolar Disorder, which often is accompanied by elevated mood, rapid speech, irritability, decreased need for sleep. Another disorder that could be contributing to your deep need to buy things compulsively is Obsessive- Compulsive Disorder, which stems from anxiety and can be treated with a type of anti-depressant in the SSRI group( i.e. Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft, Luvox.) Bipolar Disorder is a Mood Disorder and is treated with medication that stabilizes the mood, enabling you to be neither depressed or "manic", but rather at a neutral level of balance. Either way, or for correct diagnosis of something else, I would suggest a GOOD Psychiatrist to get you on the right path medication wise. If he/she thinks you could also benefit from therapy, it will be recommended to you by this Dr.

Maybe you could have a portion of every paycheck direct-deposited into a savings account that's not connected to your regular spending account. That way it would take extra effort to get the money out, and it might be enough of a psychological barrier.

You could also try cutting up any credit cards you have.

cut up the cards.. that should stop a lot of the impulse buying.

That way you have to go to the bank to pull out cash.. and in that case just pull out what you need for gas/food etc.

You'll stop when you don't have enough to pay your bill; or have to go to jail.
Wake up and do right before that happens.
