How do I do this, microsoft doesn't seem to be of any help. I read that I can change my c to d and d to c since I've used up a lot of space on it. Or should I do recovery and start clean. Does this mean I don't have any space on c left?
Also I don't want to lose xp any suggestions?

I would love to help you with this but I really don't see what you mean. Do you have 2 Hard Drives. C is usually the main Disc Space and D is normally you CD-ROM Drive. If you want to keep XP what you'll need to do is create a Second Partition and format it to NTFS. Then once you have that done you'll need to restart the computer with the Vista disc in the drive. Once it loads up you'll need to install it onto the new Partition that you've created. Once its done you may want to Install GRUB and may need to fix your MBR. After all thats done though you should be able to choose from what OS you want to start from and you wont loose anything. I recommend speaking to somone in person to have them run you through it. You can call my cell at (949) 274-6657 if you want. Hope this helps.

if you want to run both xp AND vista, it's not an upgrade you need - upgrade versions of windows overwrite your current version of windows with the new version.

to run both xp and vista you'll need a FULL install version of windows vista home basic, then install it to a different drive (f you have one) if you've no space left on drive c:.

after that it will require some editing of the boot loader to get a menu offering which operating system to boot.

you would want to partition you hard drive and load vista onto your second partition. this is called a dual boot. when you start your computer it will ask you which OS you want to run. now if your hard drive is not partiotioned right now you will need a program like partition magic to split the drive without loosing anything. if it is partition then just format the second partition and insert the vista disk. when it asks where you what to install it to choose the second partition.

Can't imagine what your objective is, but I think you've just set your sites on an overwhelming project. Get another pc for the vista and save yourself lots and lots of grief.

Yes. Dont do it, or you will be sorry. Many people with Vista have, or wish they could "upgrade" to XP. Your printers wont work with Vista, unless they are nearly new. Same with other hardware. "Upgrading" to Vista requires professional expertise, and professionals, like myself, suggest waiting at least two years.
