what are some good tricks to help me stop obsessively think about bad thoughts that are driving me nuts!

If the thoughts are about harming yourself or someone else, please get professional help.
If the bad thoughts are worries, you could try once and for all deciding what you would do in a given situation.
Once you know what you would do, you will not need to worry about it so much. I hope this helps.

I have the same problem as you (some of the time) so I've posted a link I found which might help you. There's too much on the first page to summarize here but on the second page are two lists. The one on the left lists some typical negative thoughts while the list on the right lists all the positive alternatives. You'll need to train yourself to try and think more positively and perhaps it may be an idea to see a cognitive behavioral therapist. I've attached a second link which hopefully you can use to find a therapist near you. I wish you the best of luck.

take a long walk, Think of all the wonderful things that you could do to help someone out this time of year. Visit the elderly, adopt an animal, volunteer at a salvation army, give to the poor.

think of those that have much less than you and are still able to smile
