Arrogance. Your first response is a prime example.
As an agnostic, I can see why many believe what they do on all sides, but when any side starts accusing the other of being wrong, they respond in kind. And, since none of it can be proven in any direction, the disagreements will continue.
Also, having grown up going to church 3 times a week, I can call myself an atheist when it comes to religions of this world. Sadly, many christians really do think they're helping, and atheists don't WANT what is considered that help. So, both sides get offended.

I think just reading some of these answers answers your question. I think people should live with the motto maybe the other one is right. You may not agree with their beliefs but that does not make you God. By that i mean going around telling others who is and who is not going to hell. Or others who try to tear others faith apart. This world would be a much better place if you could all just along. I honestly could never be part of a religion who does that. I know many people who think that way so if you think that by tearing peoples beleifs apart and scaring them is turning them to your faith i think you would find your sadly mistaken.

Because no one can, with absolute certainty and coherence, determine which system of beliefs is most "correct". And rather than accept the fact that we COULD live harmoniously in spite of our radically different religious perspectives, it seems to be a natural inclination for people to spout out what they consider to be proof of their correctness and condemn anyone and everyone whose beliefs differ from that standard.
When it comes down to it, I don't think that religious affiliation necessarily prevents you from being friends with anyone. Religion is very personal to most people; perhaps it should be for everyone. There is no reason a Christian couldn't be friends with, and reside harmoniously with, an Athiest, a Buddhist, a Muslim et cetera... If you don't agree, you don't agree. And isn't it a bit pompous to sit around trying to change the fundamentals of other peoples' beliefs, anyway?
People should be who they are and believe what they believe without having to succumb to religious (or anti-religious) zealots who think they have the answers to everything.

Religion is the most important thing in some people's lives, even more important than things like family. Of course strong emotions and beliefs. Sometimes these clash and people become angry and irrational.

It is sad, isn't this. So much judging and finger pointing! My, how our behavior must hurt the Lord! I try never to judge and yet, I have to admit that there are times when my ire is raised by a tacky question.
In as much, let's pray that much peace will be found between the non-believers and the believers. Let us pray that God's peace will fall upon this site for those seeking God. Jesus taught that all things should be done through love! I pray that this will be just as true for everyone...believers and non-believers as well. There is just no sense in hurting others! May God's will be done in each of our lives.

Because they can not comprehend a world in which we all actually get along. Could you? I mean, if there weren't ANY disputes between any of us, how would we know what peace was? You need the bad to understand the good. Everyone and everything has its niche. Not to justify this bigotry and racism that runs rampid around the world, but if we didn't have that how could we fully appreciat acceptance and tolerance?

Because they are uncool around people that do not think the same way they do; They feel at an disadvantage and must attack first. This is why he have had so many wars over religion through out history. It does make no sense, but that is the way of man kind: sucks don't it!

Ever hear a song from the 60s with the line "how can anyone be right, when everybody's wrong?"
My prayer is not to be proven right, but to ask to be given the words to share His message.
See...that's the one thing about Truth...it's objective, and not subjective to the person. There's a lot about my faith that I have had to struggle with, and will continue to struggle with, but I will continue to seek after the truth, and allow it to change me, and not me changing truth to define me.
Yes...a lot of people are bound to be angy, but most comes from being told "you're wrong". It works both ways..Atheist get angry for being told their wrong, and same with Christians.
But get angry? No.... because I also believe God's Truth is something we are either aware of, or blind to. And if a blind man bumped into me, how can I get angry at him for something he was unable to prevent? I will always be open to debate and discussion - but the line gets drawn when someone writes "prayer is nothing more than oral sex" or "Mary took it up the ***" No...at that point, it is no longer an intellectual discussion, but just plain crude.
My prayer is to ask God to allow us to continue to meet and be able to discuss the possibility of a Divine Being, rather than have to reel from the absolute crud that sometimes gets posted.

Because people are really closed minded.
They believe that their ideals or opinions are the best and that they are the ones to live by and are unwilling to see what life is like on the other side.
There are many reasons....some people are just so biased from one thing or another they are not willing to open their mind or their heart to anything other than what they know or have been raised with.

I get angry at my faith being attacked and by my character being attacked because of my faith. I don't have a problem with other people having other beliefs, it's a free country here in America and that's something we consider a personal freedom. But different beliefs don't equal permission to be disrespectful. I think I can disagree respectfully, but it makes my blood boil to be called stupid or blind or a slave master by someone who exemplifies stupid, rude and blind.
Moirae's answer is a perfect example of what I'm talking about. She doesn't want to be a slave to "Christians" so she will attack them without provocation. No one said anything rude to her, but "Christians" are bad. Arrrgh!
