It is the desert of Paran.
It didn't take 40 years to cross, The Hebrew were within striking distance of the Holy land shortly after they left Mt. Horeb. But because the people did not have faith that God would deliver the Holy Land to them after their first recon mission into it, he denied them entry until everyone who had left Egypt with Moses had died, save Joshua. Only their descendants were allowed to enter.

Do you mean the Desert of Paran? Can you be a bit more specific, there's LOTS of barren land on the Sinai Peninsula lol

There is none. You could cross Sinai on foot in 40 days, not 40 years, if you had enough supplies. Probably less.
The OT story is that God deliberately made the Jews wander for 40 years so that the old generation with its slave mentality would die out.

The Sinai desert is not that big. Suez to Gaza is about 200km. If it took you forty years to get across you would be covering about 14metres a day. A tortoise would be quicker.
