My property taxes went down by more than $500 this year. What would make this happen?

TWO numbers affect your property tax amount. The tax RATE and the assessed value of the property. Unless someone made a mistake, one of these numbers went down.

I don't know how AZ property taxes work, but where I live, tax levies for schools are based on the total $ amount to be collected. If new homes are built within the school district, the rate is reduced to keep the total amount constant.

because your property was no assessed to be worth as much as previously. Also because the decreased some tax. I'm here in AZ also and they have bond overrides a lot, maybe one expired??? Check your statment you get every year.
