If you can afford two cats, get one of each so they have a friend!
I have three females who are all very sweet and loving, but I have heard boys are more affectionate statistically.
It is more how you handle them and keep them interested in playing as they grow up though. If you want a gentle but playful cat, be gentle with it as a kitten(don't put up with any bitting or scratching when playing, just stop and walk away) and keep the cat playful by using interactive toys so they stay in good shape and interested in playing games with you.

I've had several cats over the years and my all time favorite has been a black shorthaired male. He's affectionate and never hisses at me or scratches me as some females do when they're feeling bitchy. Male cats, like men, are not as fearsome as the female. She's usually a better ratter and mouser than a male, too. I never go looking for a cat either male or female but they always seem to find me when I ride my bike by the creek where people dump their unwanted kittens. If you want the least expensive cat to spay or neuter, get a male because female spay surgery is more invasive and prone to complications than male.
I keep new kittens in a spare bathroom with food, water and a litter box. Toilet seat should be down! In a few days, you can let them out to roam since they'll know where the litter box is by then. If you play with it when you're home, it'll learn to nap while you're away.

It is hard to keep a kitten in anything. They are like a free agent. It would be very unhappy caged up. I would personally go for a girl. A boy, even fixed, can still spray your stuff. You can count on the kitten being playful if it is good and healthy but the cat(when grown) will have whatever personality it wants. Most are very loving but some cats don't want to be bothered by people.
I'm so glad you are getting it fixed. You sound like you will be a very responsible pet owner. Congratulations on the addition to your family!

i gotta say a boy is better, but i'm somewhat biased. i grew up with a female cat who was very aloof, and now i have a four year old male who is very social and playful. it depends on the personality of the individual animal though. whatever you do, don't get a kitten who seems shy or afraid of you, 'cuz they're not likely to grow out of it.
you don't need to shut your kitty up while you're gone. instead keep him in the room where his litter box will be for the first few nights so he gets used to using it. if you keep him shut up during the day, he'll just bawl the whole time.

if you want it to be playful as an adult get a boy. i love my girl cat but shes no where near as full of energy as our two older boy cats. plus they like to cuddle more! we just let our kittens run around the house. but i guess for the first week or two we kept them in the laundry room so they wouldnt get lost and so we could train them to use the litter box.
- if you can, maybe you could get two boys? also, the people who are saying that you should get a girl cat dont know much about cats... girls are more laid back... and boys are more bouncy and full of energy (and the peeing part, once you fix the cat and train them to use the litter box that'll never happen) I grew up on a farm so i've had probably a hundred cats lol but the guys were always the freindliest. they had more energy and liked to be around people more.

let the kitten roam around free!!use sisal scratching post because cats LOVE them and i mean love!!when your potty training it you should gently place him in his box and caress him and hell get the message to pee or whatever buisness he has to do lol.dont keep him or her locked up because the point of a cat is to have a little furry friend to cuddle up with that can somehow take care of themself.O and i think you should get a boy because girls are very dominant and tend to be itchy with a B.ahha yes boy cats are much friendlier and im telling you the cat may scrath a few times but you have to be able to love it and it wont matter dont remove its claws or return it because removing its clause is like ripping hes fingers off OUCCHH!lol anyway, just buy claw caps for the kitty.they are like little rubber tips that the vet can simply slip over the claws and its pain free!yaaayyythey come in colors too so have fun i hope i helped!

first off, if you adopt the kitten you cannot let it be alone for more than a few hours. kittens need attention, either by its owners or other cats. they will recommend you getting two kittens or a cat.
secondly, you should find the kitten that you fall in love with, sex of it wont matter since it's going to be fixed!

Keep the kitty in a kennel during the day. It shouldn't take too long to get it used to the litter box.
Both genders of cats are cool. Check out other people's cats and see what kind of vibe you get from the different sexes. You can also ask people who work in animal shelters or pet stores what they think about it. Good luck.

I am a long time cat owner. I have grown to prefer male cats. I have found them to be very loving and good company for me and my children.
I would keep the kitten in a smaller room in your home with the liter box, food, water and play toys for awhile. That way he can get used to where the liter box is.

It depends, if you want a better well-behaved cat you should get a boy (especially if you have children). If you want a cat that always wants to play and follows you around everywhere, but sometimes grouchy, you should get a girl. If you don't want your cat sleeping on the furniture, I suggest you get it a little pet bed to keep it in, and most importantly, ALWAYS put it where your cat will find it. Your cat will probably find it if you put catnip it it. My cat absoluteley LOVES catnip. It keeps her busy for most of the day!!! I hope I was hopeful and have a Happy Thanksgiving!!!!!! :-)
