A creator god would not. It was an easy way for the elders to get the younger men to follow the easiest hygienic path to prevent infection and phimosis later. Roaming around the desert doesn't leave many chances to bathe. Nobody would agree to such a thing just because they were in the desert, but the Hebrews were very religious, and WERE willing to follow an order from their god (by way of the elder priests). It was written into their religious laws to keep their young, healthy men from being killed, maimed or taken out of action by an unnecessary infection caused from poor hygiene.

There are 3 'signs' of the covenant between God and the Israelites (the Jewish people). 1. circumcision 2. the Sabbath and 3. the placing of phylacteries (boxes containing scriptures) on the arm and head when praying
All three serve the same purpose, that is to focus man's attention on the spiritual above the physical.
The binding of the phylacteries demonstrates that one is a servant of God. On the Sabbath, all creative work is avoided, thus one relies on God for everything on the Sabbath. And the circumcision, which some say dulls the male sexual response, is an act which demonstrates one's control over one's animal lusts.
It is noteworthy that the 3 signs are only incumbent on men. Women have only 1...the Sabbath. That is because women are naturally on a higher spiritual level than men and don't need the other constant reminders.

LOL I was reading that just the other day and was thinking WTF?
My dad wasn't circumsized as a baby but had to due to medical problems in later adult years. He said it was the most "god aweful thing"
I can not imagine all those guys going through that.
And what's the deal with flat bread too. Why flat bread on Passover?

Not sure but it is amazing what the Christian God always wanted his chosen people to do. Sometimes the "laws" seem more like punishment
I had another answer but the mood I am in I may get suspended...LOL

It was for sanitary reasons as far as I know. I also know it's supposed to be done when a baby is 8 days old because that's when the blood starts to clot ( at least according to a friend who is a nurse).

Circumcision in ancient times was a symbol of slavery. Slavery to your god.

This was originally meant as a contract between God and His people. It differentiated God's people from the pagans. Over the centuries, though, it was adopted by both Christians and non-believers for hygienic reasons and tradition.

It wasn't meant that way. It was meant to be a separated people from the world. To be cut off from sin and places of sin. To stay away from the influences of things that cause sin.
