America has a strong economy, aging native population, unrealistic worker-protection laws, and even still has a strong currency relative to some others.

The combination means that an illegal immigrant can come to America, work illegally for an employer who wants to circumvent labor-protection regulations, and even though he's underpaid and living in apalling conditions, send home some money that, when converted to the local currency, constitutes a nice chunk of change for his family.

It also means that if employers want to hire younger (thus cheaper) employees, they have to import them, since there just aren't enough young, well-educated Americans to fill such positions.
